Sarebbe giusto da parte sua rendere pubblico questo mio pensiero d’irritazione per riaffermare la verità.

Questo è un libro che ti rimane appiccicato addosso, un po’ come per effetto dell’umidità di Bombay, stando a quello che si dice in generale dell’India, di cui probabilmente non riesci a liberarti neanche dopo una doccia fredda.

Gregory David Roberts è uno che lo devi vedere. Finisci il libro e la prima cosa che fai è andare in internet a cercare qualcosa di più. Esiste un sito dedicato espressamente a Shantaram, con sulla home page la foto dell’autore in sella a un chopper con una faccia solcata da rughe sottili e una treccia bionda lunga fino alle spalle. E finalmente riesci a dare un volto a quel tipo strano, passionale, furbo e chissà cos’altro che ti è rimasto incollato addosso in modo così potente per tutte le 1177 pagine.

Qualsiasi riferimento alla trama è superfluo. È inutile dire che la storia è la storia vera dell’autore, soffermarsi a discutere di tutti i riferimenti culturali, politici, storici e sociologici, o parlare della natura inclemente, della complessa fauna umana o delle situazioni estreme che incontri andando avanti nella storia. Sfogli le pagine e segui i personaggi, o meglio, le persone, entri nelle vicende, nelle discussioni, nelle passioni e nelle lotte e non ti chiedi perché e non ti fai domande. Tutto è come deve essere. È così che deve andare. Ed è così che mi immagino l’India.

Un’opera globale, libro, sito, persona, vita. Vale la pena.
